A randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial of a multi-strain probiotic formulation (Bio-Kult®) in the management of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome

Key finding: Double-blind trial in Bangladesh with 400 adults with moderate to severe diarrhoea-predominant IBS, 2 capsules twice a day (8 billion CFU) for 16 weeks: the severity of abdominal pain fell 69% against 47% on placebo (p < 0.001), and the number of bowel movements fell from month 2. The manufacturer supplied the capsules and paid for help writing the paper, and the trial was registered only after it had started.
